Geocaching - We are going on a treasure hunt!

Did you know that millions of hidden containers are scattered all over the world? Geocaching is a game where you search for "caches" hidden by other players. Using coordinates or the app, you navigate to the location and search for the hidden box. These come in various shapes and sizes, from a tiny film canister to a large plastic box. They are often hidden in clever ways: inside a hollow tree, under a rock, or even attached to an information board with a magnet. Searching fun for both children and adults!

Tips for geocaching

  • You can enter the coordinates of each cache into your GPS, but using the app is more convenient. It is available for free on iOS and Android. The app navigiert you to the chosen cache (= hidden box) and alerts you when you are close by. That's when you start searching.
  • On the map, you can see where all the nearby caches are hidden. Once you find a cache, you can log it with a smiley face :-)
  • It can be quite frustrating if you can't find the cache after a long search. Tip: check the app or website beforehand to see if others found the cache easily.
  • Some caches provide an extra hint alongside the location, such as "look a bit higher" or "don't be afraid to get your hands dirty." These make the search a little easier.
  • Bring a pen with you! Inside every cache is a piece of paper (a logbook) where you can fill in the date and your name.
  • Larger caches also contain all kinds of trinkets: a small toy, a pin, a card. The idea is that you take one item out and replace it with one of your own. Extra fun for the kids.
  • Put every cache back carefully so that other geocachers can enjoy finding it too.
