The great golden age of the Begijnhof took place between the second half and the end of the 17th century. The number of beguines rose to 160 at that time, making it necessary to build additional houses. From the second half of the 18th century onward, the number of beguines gradually declined. In 1972, the very last beguine left the Begijnhof for good.
This impressive church was built between 1524 and 1546, commissioned by Count Antoon de Lalaing and Countess Elisabeth van Culemborg. The plans were designed by Rombout Keldermans, one of the architects of the Antwerp Cathedral. Measuring 80 meters in length and featuring a 104.70-meter-high tower, the church is often called the "triumph of bricks." It is with good reason that it stands as one of the tallest brick buildings in the world.
